Review return items and reason codes

Pull the ACH return file and review each item. Check the return reason code - R01 (insufficient funds), R02 (account closed), R03 (no account), etc. Different codes have different handling requirements and timelines under NACHA rules.

Verify return eligibility and timing

Check that each return is within the allowed timeframe. Most returns must be initiated within 2 banking days of settlement. Unauthorized returns (R10) have extended timelines. Late returns expose the bank to risk - flag any questionable timing.

Process returns and debit accounts

Transmit returns to Fed
